Hong Kong Highlanders perform at the Cultural
Centre
On 3 July 2010, the Hong Kong Highlanders and others gave a display
of Scottish performing arts on an open stage in the foyer of the HK
Cultural Centre, accompanied by the Red Tartan Pipe Band.
The event was part of a regular series for local arts performers. The
Highlanders' Demonstration Team comprised
Lucette Black
Gianluca Croce
Janet Draper
Stephen Li and
Richard & Jean McKeown
Arthur McNeill
Anne Lee
They danced the Garry Strathspey, Bonnie Anne and Summer Assembly.
Other dance demonstrations were by:
The Caper Folk Dance Group of the Oi Kwan Community Services Centre
The Sacred Heart Canossian College Dance Club, who danced a blend of
Highland dances showing the progression of Scottish tradition into modern
performance, and
The Scottish Dancing Group, who danced New Virginia Reel.
The performance was organised by Joe Schembri, convenor of the Reel
Club, a dance-focussed group within the Hong Kong Highlanders, Arthur
McNeill and Stephen Li and lasted an hour, with commentary on country
and Highland dancing, the dances themselves, the bagpipes and Scottish
dress by Anne Lee and the Fear an Taigh, David McKellar.
The demonstration was well received and we hope to repeat it in the
future.
A big thank you to Joe, all of the participants and the Cultural Centre
for affording us the opportunity of further demonstrating these aspects
of Scottish culture. Click on the images below to see further photographs.
